Swayam
Swayam is a Kolkata based feminist organisation committed to advancing women’s rights and ending inequality and violence against women and girls, established in 1995. Swayam takes a multi-pronged approach to addressing these issues and works both at the curative and preventive levels. Swayam’s holistic approach includes comprehensive and direct services for women facing violence, influencing public opinion and action through education and awareness; producing and sharing information and expertise; networking and advocating for socio-legal and policy level changes; and mobilizing women, men and youth in rural and urban communities to access rights and address violence against women.
Participant Profile: Anuradha Kapoor (Director)
Anuradha is an activist, trainer and consultant for women and human rights organizations, academic institutions and UN agencies and has also contributed to research and manuals addressing violence against women. She is actively involved in advocacy on women’s rights and keenly advocated for the introduction of The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (2005). She has also contributed to numerous other legal and policy initiatives including the Civil Society Alternative Report for India to the CEDAW Committee in 2014. She is both an Ashoka Fellow and an Eisenhower Fellow and a member of the Civil Society Advisory Group for UN Women’s Multi-Country Office for India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
